Montecarlo, a una mezz'oretta da Lucca...

Talvolta, parlando con qualche studente straniero delle località intorno a Lucca che vale la pena visitare, si consiglia anche Montecarlo. Lo studente rimane un po' perplesso, perché lipperlì gli viene da pensare a Montecarlo nel Principato di Monaco, e non gli sembra che sia nei dintorni di Lucca. Ma il dubbio è presto dissolto: esiste anche un piccolo paese fortificato che si chiama Montecarlo perché fu costruito dal futuro imperatore Carlo IV di Boemia nel 1333. Questo paese è su una collina a circa 15 km da Lucca. Sulle sue pendici si coltivano viti e olivi, da cui si ricavano un vino di pregio e un ottimo olio. Il paese conserva ancora benissimo il suo patrimonio storico, in particolare la rocca, la chiesa di S. Andrea, parte delle mura medievali e il teatro del Settecento.

Sometimes, when talking with a foreign student about places around Lucca that are worth a visit, we happen to mention Montecarlo. The student is puzzled, because at first he thinks of Montecarlo in the Princedom Monaco, which is located pretty far from Lucca, not exactly around it. But soon his doubt is cleared: there exists also a small fortified hamlet, named Montecarlo after the future emperor Charles IV of Bohemia had it built in the year 1333. This village stands on a hill at about 15 km from Lucca, on which olive groves and vineyards are grown, producing very fine wines and an excellent extra virgin olive oil. The historic heritage of the hamlet is well preserved, in particular its castle, the romanesque church of S. Andrea, part of the medieval walls and its theatre from the XVIII century.
