Parla e cucina italiano: cronaca di un giro in Garfagnana - Speak and cook Italian: our tour in Garfagnana

Questo è un breve resoconto del giro che abbiamo fatto il 10 maggio scorso con i partecipanti al nostro programma Parla e Cucina Italiano, un corso che unisce lo studio della lingua agli aspetti culinari e gastronomici della nostra regione. Prima di decidere la data avevamo tenuto d'occhio le previsioni del tempo, e in effetti questa volta il meteorologo ci ha azzeccato in pieno: era una giornata di sole, il cielo blu e il verde splendente dei boschi intorno a noi, non potevamo chiedere di meglio.

Siamo partiti da Lucca alle 8 per raggiungere Pieve Fosciana, dove si trova il caseificio Bertagni, il primo posto che abbiamo visitato: qui, guidati dal giovane proprietario Verano, abbiamo visto il processo di produzione dei formaggi e della ricotta, poi abbiamo visitato le stanze per la conservazione e la stagionatura, ed infine abbiamo degustato i formaggi del caseificio, di latte vaccino, ovino, e caprino, accompagnati con miele d'acacia e marmellata di mirtilli.

This is a brief report of the tour we took on May 10 with the participants in our program Speak and Cook Italian, a course combining the study of the language with the cooking and gastronomy of our community. Before scheduling the program, we had had a look at the weather forecast and I must say this time the meteorologist did guess alright: it was a sunny day, blue sky and the bright green of the woods surrounding us, we could not ask for more!

We left Lucca at 8 to reach Pieve Fosciana, the town where Bertagni cheese factory is located: here, guided by the young owner Verano, we saw the process of making cheese and ricotta, then we visited the stores and ageing rooms, and finally we tasted the different excellent sorts of cheese from cow's, sheep's and goat's milk, accompanied with acacia's honey and blueberry jam.

La seconda tappa del nostro giro è stata il paese di Sillico, un borgo situato sulle pendici dell'appennino a circa 700 metri di altezza, da dove si gode un vasto e splendido panorama sulle Alpi Apuane. Qui abbiamo visitato il Palazzo Carli, sede del museo della comunità, guidati da Mauro, un simpatico signore che ci ha raccontato la storia del paese e del Moro, il brigante che si opponeva al governo degli Estensi nel '500.

The second visit of our tour was Sillico, a village on the slopes of the Appennine at 700 meters height , where we enjoyed a broad and splendid view on the Apuan Alps. Here we visited Palazzo Carli, hosting the community's museum: our guide was Mauro, a nice guy who spoke to us about the history of the village and the life of the Moro, a bandit who fought the Este governors back in the 16th century.

Poi abbiamo pranzato al Ristorante Belvedere, proprio all'ingresso del paese, gustando dei piatti tipici, come la polenta di formenton otto file, la ricotta fritta e il cinghiale in umido con le olive.

Then we had lunch at the Ristorante Belvedere, right at the entrance to the village, tasting typical food, like polenta made with a local variety of mais "formenton otto file", fried ricotta, and wild boar stew with olives.

Partiti da Sillico, siamo ritornati sulla strada principale della Garfagnana e ci siamo diretti a San Romano. Qui, abbiamo visitato la rocca delle Verrucole, un imponente castello medievale con una vista a 360 gradi su tutta la valle del Serchio.

We then left Sillico and took again the main Garfagnana road heading for San Romano. Here we visited the Verrucole stronghold, an imposing medieval castle offering a 360 degree view on the Serchio valley.

Poi abbiamo ripreso la strada e abbiamo raggiunto Barga, dove abbiamo visitato il centro medievale con una passeggiata fino al caratteristico duomo romanico, che si trova proprio alla sommità del paese, nel quale spiccano il maestoso pulpito di marmo e la gigantesca statua lignea di San Cristoforo.

Then we continued our tour reaching Barga, where we visited its medieval center, a nice walk uphill to the unusually shaped romanesque cathedral right at the village top, inside which your eye is caught by a magnificent marble pulpit and a giant wooden statue of Saint Christopher.

E dopo la visita di Barga, lungo la strada che ci riportava a Lucca, abbiamo fatto una breve sosta al Ponte del Diavolo, una costruzione risalente al medioevo: data la difficoltà di erigere il ponte, si dice che fosse stata necessaria la collaborazione del diavolo. Con l'arrivo a Lucca verso le 6 del pomeriggio abbiamo trovato il solito traffico cittadino e siamo tornati alla normalità, ma dopo una giornata perfetta che ricorderemo a lungo!

And finally, after the visit to Barga, on our way back to Lucca, we stopped at the Devil's Bridge, built in the Middle Ages: as its construction proved hard to complete, they say that the devil was asked to give a hand to it. Arriving in Lucca at about 6 pm. we found the usual city traffic and got back to normality after a perfect day we will remember for long!
