La storia di due nostri cari studenti, Susan e Jim

Una nostra studentessa e amica, Celinda Shannon, ha intervistato due compagni di studio qui a LIS, e ci fa molto piacere condividere con voi il testo dell'intervista. Si parla della loro scelta di venire in Italia, e a Lucca, e della loro esperienza qui alla nostra scuola.

Età: tra i 60 e i 70 anni

La loro storia: che lavoro facevate?

Susan ha fondato una compagnia di assicurazione. Grazie alla sua esperienza nelle vendite e alla sua determinazione, il business è partito molto bene. Poco dopo, Jim ha lasciato il suo lavoro e ha comnciato a lavorare insieme a Susan. Hanno lavorato insieme per 15 anni, con successo.

Perchè l'Italia?

Jim aveva già viaggiato in Italia molte volte, fin dal 1981. Il suo amore per “la dolce vita” è scoccato da subito, ed è sempre rimasto vivo, come la fiammella pilota in una stufa a gas. Dopo 25 anni insieme e 15 anni di business, hanno deciso che era arrivato il momento di una nuova avventura. Erano venuti insieme in Italia alcune volte, visitando Amalfi, la Sicilia, Roma, ed entrambi si erano innamorati di questi luoghi. Il seme era piantato, ora dovevano solo fare il loro piano. Nel giro di un anno, hanno venduto la loro attività, la casa, e la maggior parte delle loro proprietà per cominciare un nuovo capitolo nella loro vita – imparare l'italiano e vivere in Italia!

Perchè Lucca?

“ Cercavamo un posto in Toscana, una città piccola, dove ci si potesse muovere facilmente a piedi o in bicicletta, così da non avere bisogno della macchina. Lucca era in cima alla classifica. Dopo aver cominciato a fare ricerche, abbiamo e parlato con parecchie persone che c' erano state e che ne parlavano benissimo” dice Susan.

Quanto tempo pensate di fermarvi qui?

“Siamo arrivati all'inizio di aprile e speriamo di restare qui fino a che siamo in salute. Quindi per un bel po'! Ci piace pensare almeno 4 o 5 anni. Ci mancano tutti, ma aspettiamo molti ospiti. E torneremo negli Stati Uniti a gennaio 2019.”

In che modo avete saputo di LIS?

“Quando abbiamo cominciato a cercare un modo per imparare l'italiano, LIS era in cima alla nostra lista. Una nostra amica, Joanne Bartram, ha studiato a LIS e ce l'ha raccomandata con entusiasmo.”

Per quanto tempo avete studiato a LIS e quanto ancora intendete studiare?

“Ci siamo iscritti per un mese – abbiamo fatto una settimana di pausa per riposarci un po' e conoscere la zona, ora siamo tornati a scuola. Torneremo per una settimana alla volta per continuare a imparare a per conoscere nuovi studenti.”

Che consiglio potreste dare a un nuovo studente LIS?

“ Prendetela con calma” dice Jim, “ e non aspettatevi di capire tutto da subito. Le lezioni sono intensive, ma molto utili. Non abbiate paura di fare domande, probabilmente anche altri studenti vorranno sapere la stessa cosa.”

Qual è stata una esperienza particolarmente bella fatta con LIS?

“Ci è piaciuto moltissimo il giro fatto a Pietrasanta; è stato affascinante incontrare alcuni artigiani che lavorano il marmo, la pelle, o dipingono, nei loro laboratori. Inoltre, la gita si sarebbe potuta trasformare in una esperienza poco piacevole a causa di alcuni problemi con i treni, ma la nostra guida Susanna ha superato brillantemente e velocemente ogni ostacolo e tutto è andato liscio.”

Qual è la cosa più bella di LIS?

“Le persone” dice Susan. “ Ognuno ha la propria avventura e ha storie e esperienze da condividere. Tutto è molto divertente. Tutti sono accoglienti e socievoli.” Jim continua: “ Gli insegnanti desiderano che gli studenti imparino. Amano il loro lavoro e lo fanno diventare una esperienza di apprendimento divertente.”

Cosa pensano i vostri amici / la vostra famiglia di questa esperienza?

“ La nostra famiglia e gli amici ci sostengono e sono felici per noi. Alcuni nostri amici ci dicono: “Perchè non l'abbiamo fatto noi?” racconta Susan. “ E' dura stare lontani dalle nostre tre figlie e dai tre nipoti, ma con Skype possiamo stare in contatto e “vederci” regolarmente.” dice Jim.

Aggungo che Susan e Jim hanno studiato italiano per un anno presso un centro culturale nella loro città prima di arrivare in Italia. Lì hanno incontrato nuovi amici e 6 di loro vengono a Lucca a giugno e sono già iscritti a LIS!

Background – what did you used to do for work?

Susan started a company selling health and life insurance.  With Susan’s past experience in sales and her determination, the business took off.  Soon thereafter Jim left his work at AT&T and joined Susan in the business. They worked together for 15 years growing a successful business.

Why Italy? Jim had travelled to Italy several times starting in 1981.  His love of “la dolce vita” was sparked then and always remained lit, like the pilot light on a gas stove.  After 25 years together and 15 years with their business, they decided it was time for a new adventure. They had travelled together to Italy a few times to the Amalfi coast, Sicily and Rome and both LOVED it here.  The seed was planted, now all they needed to do was to make a plan. Within a year, they sold their business, along with their home and a majority of their possessions to embark on a new chapter in their lives - learning Italian and living in Italy!

Why Lucca?  “We wanted a place in Tuscany, a small city, that was walkable and bikeable where we would not need a car.  Lucca kept rising to the top. Once we started researching and looking into it, we found a lot of information and talked to a number of people who had been here and raved about it,” says Susan.

How long do you plan on being here?  “We arrived in early April and hope to remain here as long as we are healthy. A long time!  We like to say 4 or 5 years. We miss everyone, but we are expecting many guests. Our first return trip to the U.S. is in January 2019.”

How did you hear about LIS?  “When we started looking into learning Italian, the Lucca Italian School was at the top of the list. Our friend, Joanne Bartram, has taken classes at LIS and highly recommended it.”

How long have you been taking classes and how long do you intend on taking classes?  “We signed up for a month - took one week off to rest our brains and do some exploring outside of the city - and are now back at it.  We will return for a week at a time to keep ourselves engaged in learning the language and meeting new people.”

What advice would you give a new student to LIS?  “Go easy on yourself,” says Jim, “and don’t expect to pick up everything right away.  As an immersion program, the classes are intense, but extremely supportive. And don’t be afraid to ask questions that you think other people might already know.  Maybe someone else is wondering the same thing.”

What’s been a favorite program you have done with LIS?  “We had a ball doing the tour of Pietrasanta. It was fascinating to meet some true artisans working in their ‘laboratorios’ with  marble, leather working and painting. AND, what could have been very inconvenient, worked out well due to the quick-thinking of our guide, Susanna.  We had some trouble with transportation both coming to and leaving Pietrasanta. We were really impressed with how she handled the hiccups and helped us to have an enjoyable and smooth visit.”

What’s the best part about LIS? “The people,” says Susan.  “Everyone is on their own adventure here and has stories and experiences to share and tell.  It’s so much fun. People are welcoming and social.” Jim notes that, “The teachers want you to learn.  They enjoy their work and make it a fun learning experience.”

What do your friends / family think of what you are doing?  “Our family and friends are really supportive and excited for us.  A number of our friends remarked, why didn’t we do that?,” says Susan.  “It’s tough being away from our three daughters and three grandchildren, but with Skype, we are able to touch base often and “see” them on a regular basis,” says Jim.

On a side note: Susan and Jim took Italian classes for a year in their hometown at their local continuing education program prior to coming to Italy.  They made some good friends there and in fact 6 of them are coming to Lucca in June and have already enrolled in classes at LIS!
