PRIMA EDIZIONE DI OPERA LUCCA FESTIVAL: UN GRANDE SUCCESSO

Opera Lucca Premiere Season:  A Great Success

The idea for an Opera School was something that had been percolating in the mind of James Massol, Director of the Opera Lucca School, for a while. But, it wasn’t until last summer when James and his family decided to visit Lucca for a family holiday that the wheels were set in motion. While on holiday here in Lucca, James was looking for an Italian-speaking babysitter for his two children and approached the Lucca Italian School to see if any of the teachers might know someone who could fill the role.

It was then that the idea sparked in his mind - what about hosting an opera and language school in the heart of Tuscany at what some consider the birthplace of opera? It wasn’t a far stretch of the imagination as James had done four similar musical programs in Lucca during the summer months while he was a student at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music studying music and playing the bassoon. What would be a stretch is trying to pull this all together in less than a year.

After six months of planning, many, many emails and along with the steadfast help of the Daniela, Angelo, Eva, Susanna and the rest of the Lucca Italian School as well as the music faculty, the program was confirmed, listed on YAP Tracker and ready to launch. Auditions for spots in the school were held and soon thereafter students were confirmed and enrolled. The students came mostly from the United States, with a few coming from other countries including, Poland, Romania and Sweden. They were a varied bunch ranging in ages from 18-26 with a range of experience.

The group studied Italian in the morning for four hours and then typically had a two-hour master class in the afternoon, followed by private and/or group lessons as well as oftentimes practice and prep-work in the evenings. There was ample time on weekends to explore Lucca and the surrounding environs. They also stayed in homestays to further immerse themselves in the Italian language and culture. The student’s talents were tested in real-time at two concerts: one at Celle dei Puccini, Puccini’s ancestral home and the final night concert in Lucca at the Teatro di San Girolamo where the students performed selections from Mozart, Donizetti, Puccini and Rossini. Their progress and development in just four weeks was remarkable - some students never having performed in a theater before.

Even prior to the final night concert and group feedback, this program was deemed a huge success and plans are already under way for the second annual Opera Lucca School. Several of the students and teachers have already expressed interest in returning for a second summer season. Opera Lucca Prima Edizione: Un grande successo

L'idea di un Festival d'opera già da un po' di tempo si stava facendo strada nella mente dell'ideatore,  James Massol, Direttore di Opera Lucca. Ma solo l'estate scorsa, quando James e la sua famiglia hanno deciso di visitare Lucca per una vacanza,  è davvero partito tutto. Mentre era in vacanza qui a Lucca, James ha cercato una babysitter di lingua italiana per i suoi due bambini e per questo motivo si è avvicinato alla Lucca Italian School, per vedere se qualcuno  poteva aiutarlo.

E' stato allora che l'idea si è fatta sentire più forte e chiara - organizzare un programma per studiare lingua italiana e canto lirico nel cuore della Toscana, in quello che alcuni considerano il luogo di nascita dell'opera.  James stesso, quando studiava presso  l'Università di Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, aveva  frequentato quattro programmi musicali simili a Lucca durante i mesi estivi . La vera sfida era dunque cercare di tirar su questo ambizioso progetto in meno di un anno.

Dopo sei mesi di pianificazione, molte e molte e-mail e il costante aiuto di Daniela, Angelo, Eva, Susanna della Lucca Italian School e dei professori  di musica, il programma è stato confermato, messo su YAP Tracker e pronto per il lancio. Sono state fatte le audizioni per i posti disponibili,  e subito dopo sono partite le iscrizioni. Gli studenti provenivano principalmente dagli Stati Uniti, alcuni provenivano da altri paesi, tra cui Polonia, Romania e Svezia. Erano un gruppo variegato di età compresa tra il 18 e i 26 anni, con diverse esperienze alle spalle.

Il programma di studi si svolgeva in questo modo: il gruppo studiava l'italiano al mattino per quattro ore, nel pomeriggio c'era la “master class” di due ore , seguita da lezioni private e / o di gruppo e, spesso, pratica e preparazione anche di sera.

Nei fine settimana c'era molto tempo libero per esplorare Lucca e i dintorni.

Alcuni studenti hanno soggiornato in famiglia per immergersi ulteriormente nella lingua e nella cultura italiana.

Gli studenti hanno potuto dimostrare il loro talento in due concerti: uno a Celle dei Puccini, un pittoresco villaggio di montagna dove si trova una casa degli avi di Puccini, e l'ultimo concerto serale o a Lucca al Teatro di San Girolamo, dove gli studenti hanno eseguito selezioni da Mozart, Donizetti, Puccini e Rossini.

 Il loro progresso  in sole quattro settimane è stato veramente notevole: alcuni studenti non si erano mai esibiti in un teatro prima di quel momento.

Anche prima del concerto della serata finale e del feedback di gruppo, questo programma è stato considerato un enorme successo e si sta già preparando la seconda edizione del Festival Opera Lucca. Molti studenti e insegnanti hanno già espresso interesse a tornare per una seconda stagione estiva.
