Visita a Montecatini

Oggi siamo andati a visitare un luogo piuttosto conosciuto, che in questa stagione non è così affollato di turisti come in primavera e in estate, e perciò assume un fascino particolare: si tratta di Montecatini, un'importante località termale a circa 30 km da Lucca. In realtà il paese originario si trova in collina e si chiama Montecatini Alto: il castello e il borgo fortificato risalgono al Medioevo e costituivano un avamposto di Firenze nelle frequenti lotte con le altre città toscane di Pisa e di Lucca. Nella pianura ai suoi piedi vi era una palude, ricca di acque conosciute già nell'antichità per le loro qualità curative. Ma trattandosi di acque stagnanti, l'ambiente era alquanto insalubre. Lo sfruttamento vero e proprio come centro termale iniziò a fine '800, dopo che il Granduca Leopoldo di Toscana fece costruire dei canali per far defluire le acque. Si costruirono allora i primi stabilimenti termali e agli inizi del '900, i Bagni di Montecatini si costituirono in comune indipendente, distinto da Montecatini Alto. Poi, nel 1940 le due località si unificarono e Montecatini Terme divenne il centro amministrativo unico per entrambe. Nel frattempo si era costituita la provincia di Pistoia nel 1927 e Montecatini ne entrò a far parte.Alcuni stabilimenti termali sono dei gioielli dell'architettura in stile liberty di inizio secolo e li abbiamo potuti ammirare nella foschia di un pomeriggio autunnale, fortunatamente senza pioggia. Poi abbiamo gustato le cialde di Montecatini, deliziosi dolci fatti con farina, latte, uova e mandorle. Per raggiungere il borgo di Montecatini Alto c'è anche una funicolare che è in servizio da Marzo a Ottobre, che sale lungo un percorso ripido e pittoresco attraverso i boschi e gli oliveti della collina.

Today we went on an excursion to a well-known place, which in this season is not so crowded with tourists as in Spring and Summer, being therefore particularly charming: I am speaking of Montecatini, an important thermal center at about 30 km from Lucca. Actually, the ancient town is located on a hill and its name is Montecatini Alto: its castle and fortified hamlet date back to the Middle Ages, when it was an outpost of Florence in its frequent struggles with the other Tuscan towns of Pisa and Lucca. On the plain at its feet there was a marsh: the waters springing from the subsoil were already known for their healing qualities, but as they stagnated, the environment was rather unhealthy. The actual utilization of this resource started at the end of the XIX century, after Grand Duke Leopoldo of Tuscany had some canals built to let the waters flow out. The first thermal establishments were then erected and at the beginning of the XX century, Bagni di Montecatini became an independent municipality. Afterwards, in 1940 the two hamlets became united and the seat of the Comune was moved to Montecatini Terme, the growing center of the plain below. In the meantime Pistoia had become a Province in 1927 and Montecatini was included in its territory. Some of the thermal establishments are jewels of the Modern Style, and we could admire them in a foggy autumn afternoon, luckily without rain. Then we tasted the Cialde of Montecatini, a delicious cake made of flour, milk, eggs and almonds. To reach the hamlet of Montecatini Alto there is also a funicular operating form March to October, which connects the thermal center to the old village, climbing on a steep and picturesque track through the woods and olive groves covering the hill.
