If Christmas Day is wonderful for me because it's time to be all together, the evening of the Epiphany, however, is the most exciting moment of the holiday season, perhaps because, as we were taught by the poet Giovanni Pascoli, we should try to enhance and restore a life dimension as if we were children.

So, what happens in my house on January 5th?

2.30 p.m.: we make "befanini", typical tuscan biscuits in the shape of stars, angels, trees, hearts, flowers,... decorated with colored grains of sugar.
My kitchen is overrun with screaming little monsters (that is, my daughter and her adorable little friends) who armed with joy begin to mix all the ingredients. When, after the various processing steps that I am not to describe but I'll leave to your imagination, the biscuits are ready, we expect them to be cold and eat a lot, then put a part in special glass jars and give our friends what remains.

At this point the "mother", which in this case it's me, arms herself with a broom and reconquers the kitchen!
At this point, there are 3 options:
1) each child is picked up by a parent and continues the evening at home ...
2) some girls stay for dinner in my house
3) all the girls are at my house for dinner with their dads and moms
The correct answer is number 3 ... !!!!!!!!!!!

But I must add that this year I went even further!

8 p.m. : I commend the pastry on the table, I once again wear the aprons to the little monsters and take out two large bowls with the mixture READY, this time to make a fried dough! So again with rolling pins in hand, rolling out pastry, cutting into pieces of various shapes and frying in hot oil.
Meanwhile, the girls prepare the table: put the cheese, ham, salami and other delicacies in many trays (they are very enthusiastic to do so, since for each slice that they put in the tray, one ends in their mouth!) Then the dishes, glasses , the napkins.

In short, we are all at half past eight in the kitchen to cook, talk, eat and drink! The girls are excited and proud to offer the biscuits they have prepared, and every five minutes go in the living room to see from the window if the Befana is coming!
And finally, voices on the street! There is an old cart pulled by a donkey, where there are packages and bags of gifts, and this ugly, old and hump woman walking beside the cart, and behind it there is a group of people who play the flute, the accordion and harmonica and sing the traditional songs of the Epiphany.
It 's really a magical moment, and I forget that I am over forty, and I start screaming in the middle of the girls; I believe for a moment that I will receive my gift!
Then the Epiphany climbs the stairs of our house, the doorbell rings and we open and say "Good evening, madam Befana." She asks the girls if they were good during the past year and then gives them their gifts. I am a bit disappointed since I realize I will not have any package, but then I look around and I think the past day has been a wonderful gift!
We offer something to eat and drink to the Befana, who then leaves to continue his night of hard work!
Well, this was the feast of Epiphany 2012 in Eva's house!

And, last but not least, I want to offer you a gift - look at this wonderful, moving and funny animated film of 1996, with music by Paolo Conte, and based on a novel by Gianni Rodari, "The blue arrow" – it speaks about our Befana!
