On the occasion of our first week of the course Speak and Walk Italian, we are pleased to give a brief account of our activities,  both as it was the first time and as it went as well as it could.

In fact the weather wasn't at all promising as storms, winds and low temperatures were expected during the whole week:  but our small group with Diane from Melbourne, Australia, Glee from Washington DC, Usa and Maria Luzia from São Paulo, Brazil,  as if under the protection of a spell, could find good weather on any day spent talking Italian, walking and never get a raindrop!

La fortezza -  the fortress

On Tuesday afternoon we took the train to Castelnuovo Garfagnana and from the station we walked up to the Fortress of Montalfonso, a magnificent construction of 1500 on a mountain above Castelnuovo, wanted by the House of Este as extreme stronghold in defense of the border with the Republic of Lucca. Our students learned lots of new words about trees and flowers, and talked more fluently than usual...

On Wednesday afternoon we took the train from Lucca to Pisa and got off at San Giuliano Terme, a small town near Pisa. After crossing the town , we took the old road connecting Pisa and Lucca through Dante's Pass.  This pass is so called as Dante Alighieri, in the 23rd canto of the Divine Comedy, recalls the mountain dividing Pisa from Lucca as "the mountain by which the people from Pisa cannot see Lucca".   Here we can find a bust of the poet and a marble inscription from 1865, now worn by time and weather, but still evocative. Our students asked a lot of questions about Dante, the father of Italian language, and learned the words to describe the sight they were enjoying from the top of the hill.

On Thursday morning we  took the train to La Spezia and Cinque Terre and got to Vernazza at 10.25 pm.  On departure from Lucca it was raining hard, but I had seen an encouraging  forecast showing fine weather  in the place we were going to.  And it was right, as it turned out to be the best day of all the week, also for the amazing views we could enjoy walking on the trails of Cinque Terre.  After about two hours we got to Monterosso and had lunch at a good restaurant in the center of the ancient village.   Then we visited the other part of the town and finally took the train back to Riomaggiore, where we stayed for a couple of hours,  then back home in the evening.

On Friday afternoon we walked on the trail along the ancient acqueduct of Lucca, built in 1800 on a project of Lorenzo Nottolini. It is an imposing construction initiating on the lucchese side of the Pisani Mountains, which includes the place called "at the Golden Words", where on a bridge a sentence in Latin is carved in memory of the building: the words, outlined in brass,  once glittered, so people thought they were made of gold, therefore called them so.
After Parole d'Oro we continued walking up to the top of the hill and reached Vorno, a fine village with villas, gardens and olive groves.  There we had a good "merenda" at the Ostello del Rio, a nice place where people can have a meal and also overnight  (Vorno is in fact on Via Francigena, the way pilgrims  going to Rome once traveled)

And so the week has passed, leaving to us the memory of a great experience, which we have been pleased to recount.
