Last Sunday we went on a very fine excursion to Lupinaia, a hamlet of Garfagnana, for the feast of the chestnut, which takes place every year in November. We took the train in Lucca and got off at Fosciandora. Then we walked for about two hours on a “mulattiera” (a mule track) and we finally reached Lupinaia. In our group there were five students of Lucca Italian School, Rick, Susie, Jyotika, americans, Barbara from Switzerland and Doris from Germany. Then there were other participants from Lucca and Viareggio, who had joined the excursion organised by the Association “Il Bivacco” : Federica and Matteo guided the group. The sky was cloudy all day, but luckily it never rained, so the feast was very very agreeable. We could eat the many local delicacies offered: chestnut cakes, necci with ricotta cheese, roasted chestnuts, chestnut noodles, local salami and cheese, and drink good red wine. There was also a group of musicians, who delighted us playing polkas, mazurkas and singing songs in the village streets. At about 5 p.m. we got back to the station to take the train to Lucca, and we were home by 6.30. It was an unforgettable experience for all of us!
