Viareggio: cenni storici

Going back to its origins, Viareggio was but a hamlet around a fortress built by Lucca in the XVI century as a defense of the coast and the port at the end of the Via Regia (the Royal Road, hence the name of the town), connecting the interior to the sea. Today we can still see a portion of that fortress, namely the Torre Matilde, on the east side of town, along the Burlamacca canal: right here the first settlement of fishermen, dockers and carpenters was started. The change to a charming seaside resort as we know it today, took place much later in the XIX century, when two important women of power excercised their influence: Maria Luisa di Borbone had the first dockyard built, which brought about the development into a real town; and Paolina Bonaparte, whose villa surrounded by a park in front of the sea gave rise to the fashion of the holidays at the seaside. Consequently, during the whole XIX century, the aristocracy and the upper class went to Viareggio to bathe and on the sea promenade the first bathing establishments and wooden moles were built on piles. Then, in the following century, the Viale Regina Margherita (aka “la passeggiata”) knew the great splendour of the Modern Style, notably the Gran Caffè Margherita, meeting point of the artists and intellectuals of that period, the store Duilio 48, the Book Gallery, the bathing establishments Balena, Martinelli and Bertuccelli, all of which are still well preserved today. Besides, opposite the promenade, some big hotels were built, among which the Grand Hotel Royal and the Principe di Piemonte.
