A favourite destination for a one day trip is to the Cinque Terre (5 lands) north of the town of La Spezia in the region of Liguria, about 60 km from Lucca. It's a way of anticipating a taste of springtime, as the climate is usually milder than in our region. I decided to go there today and though I found the lower trail closed for a landslide by recent heavy rain, I took the more difficult upper trail, which made me know a part of the Cinque Terre I had not yet been hiking: the vineyards and the woods in the inland, farther from the sea. The sight in the distance was gorgeous, specially in the afternoon when clouds cleared away and the sun lit up the sea and the coastline. It was also more enjoyable as the trail and the villages were not so crowded as in summer, and hiking was relaxing and inspiring. So, from Riomaggiore to Manarola and further on to Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso, spending a day out there made me start the year with peace of mind and optimism.
