One of the most important churches in Lucca is San Frediano, ornamented with the splendid mosaic on its façade representing Christ's Ascension. Do you know who was Frediano, before he became a saint? He was an Irish monk, who came to Italy on a pilgrimage and on his way back from Rome settled near Lucca as a hermit, gathering round himself other religious willing to share his choice. As the Lucchese believed in his profound virtues, they called him to be their bishop in the year 560. Once elected, he had the church of San Vincenzo built, which took his name after his death in 588 and his canonization: his mortal remains are kept in his church. San Frediano is worshipped both in Lucca and in Florence for reported miracles on the respective rivers: the Serchio and the Arno. In the case of the river of Lucca, the Serchio, Frediano diverted its course by means of a simple rake: the waters flowed prodigiously into the new channel and the river ceased to endanger the country and the city with its frequent floods. As regards the river of Florence, it is said that Frediano went to honour the grave of the martyr Miniato but the boat could not carry him over because of the impetuous water. Then he set to pray and by miracle the river calmed down: the Florentines dedicated a church to him, right where he went ashore on the left bank.
